to be honest, i don't really care for carving pumpkins. it's messy, time consuming and a lonely job. this year was no exception. my kids love to help for 5 minutes, then leave me in to finish the rest. as tucker put it--"mom, it's good you're doing the rest cause it's good exercise for your arms."
the first 5 minutes
the next 45 minutes
the end results

They turned out cute. If this makes you feel any better, we never even got around to carving ours. My kids would try to get me to everyday and we just never did. So we have these nice large pumpkins outside that I guess will live to see Thanksgiving. So good for you for doing it-mess or no mess :)
Nice job Bon! I'll bet your arms are super buff now :)
I hear you loud & clear! It takes so long to carve a pumpkin & it makes your arm ache. I just did 1 big pumpkin & all the kids shared. Your pumpkins are cute.
I've decided that I love carving pumpkins in cold places, but really don't care for it in Phoenix. After an entire night of pumpkin carving with my girlfriends, within two days my creation was infested by gray mold and has all the fuzz creeping out of its face. Gross. To top it off, it was creating a big puddle of rotten pumpkin juice on my new countertop, which then dripped all over the floor. So mushy is was difficult to pick up and throw away. All that to say, Bon, I don't care how good it is for my arms, unless it's below 50 degrees, I'm not sure I'm down for it. Why don't they make foam pumpkins for the carving for those of us in hot states? That would be cool....
oh em they do make foam ones! we got some a few years ago. they're at michael's/joann's. ya, we carved them thursday i believe and by saturday they were already shriveling. dang hot temps.
Em, here you have to carve 'em the night before, or they just don't last. Just decorate with them whole and wait until then and they usually look bright and cheery for the main event. It makes me laugh how their grinning faces just sink in like little old men once you carve them. We tossed ours Halloween night at 7:30 sharp!
